About This Episode
Lord Ganesha is known by many names in Hindu mythology, and one of his popular names is Ekadanta. The word “Ekadanta” is derived from the Sanskrit words “eka” meaning one and “danta” meaning tusk. Lord Ganesha is called Ekadanta because he is often depicted with a single tusk. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Ganesha lost one of his tusks in a battle with the demon Gajamukhasura. Ganesha used his broken tusk to write the Mahabharata, one of the greatest epics in Hindu mythology. The single tusk is also symbolic of the concept of duality in Hindu philosophy, where the dualities of good and evil, pleasure and pain, and life and death are resolved into a single entity. Ekadanta is thus believed to represent the oneness and unity of the universe.
