About This Episode
The story of King Shwetaki and Agni is narrated in the Chandogya Upanishad, one of the ancient Hindu scriptures. According to the legend, King Shwetaki was a devout follower of the Vedic religion and had studied the Vedas extensively. Despite his knowledge, he was still plagued with doubts about the nature of the Supreme Being and the path to attain salvation. One day, he approached a sage and asked him to clarify his doubts. The sage told him to seek out Agni, the god of fire, and learn from him. King Shwetaki then went into the forest to meditate and pray to Agni. After several days of intense meditation, Agni appeared before him and offered to teach him the knowledge he sought. However, King Shwetaki was puzzled, as he knew that Agni was merely a deity and did not possess ultimate knowledge. Agni then revealed that he was merely a representative of the Supreme Being and that the knowledge he would impart to King Shwetaki would lead him to the ultimate truth. Agni then proceeded to teach King Shwetaki about the nature of the self and the universe, and how one could attain liberation from the cycle of birth and death.
