King Sagar’s son, Bhagirath, brought Ganga to earth to revive his brothers. Meanwhile, the Vasus stole Rishi Vashishtha’s celestial cow and were cursed to be born as mortals. King Mahabhishak, reborn as King Shantanu, married Ganga, who drowned their first seven children, freeing the Vasus. Their eighth child, Prabhasa, later known as Devavrata or Bhisma, was raised in heaven and returned to his father. Shantanu fell in love with Satyavati, whose father demanded their child be the legal heir. Bhisma agreed, vowing celibacy to ensure the throne’s continuity. Shantanu and Satyavati’s children became the Kauravas and Pandavas’ ancestors. This ancient tale of love, sacrifice, and devotion showcases the rich mythology of India.
