देवळात संपूर्ण गावाने मनूला अपराधी ठरवले, परंतु मनूची संपूर्ण आशा आपल्या जिवलग मित्रावर म्हणजेच विनूवर टिकून होती. मनूने भर सभेत काकुळतीने विनूला साद घालत म्हटले, “विनू, सारे जग मला दोषी मानत असले तरी चालेल, पण सुंदर वस्त्र विणणारे माझे हात कोणाचा जीव घेऊ शकतील का हे तूच गावाला सांग.” परंतु विनूने ढोंगीपणाचा आव आणून, “सत्याशी माझी अधिक मैत्री आहे, मनूनेच वेडाच्या लहरीत हा खून केला असावा आणि आता तो साळसूदपणाचा आव आणत आहे,” असे म्हणून मनूवरच तो अक्षम्य आळ ढकलला. ज्या मित्राच्या आधारावर मनू आजवर जगत होता, त्याच्याच तोंडून आलेले हे क्रूर शब्द ऐकून मनूचे हृदय पूर्णपणे भग्न झाले आणि विश्वासाचा सर्वात प्रखर प्रहार त्याच्या अंतःकरणावर झाला.
गावाने मनूवर ‘खुनी’ असा सामाजिक शिक्का मारला आणि तो घरातच स्वतःला कोंडून घेऊ लागला[. जगात सत्य, प्रेम किंवा न्याय उरलेला नाही या भयंकर नैराश्याने त्याला ग्रासले, आणि अखेर एका काळ्याकुट्ट मध्यरात्री त्याने आपले पूर्वजांचे घर व गाव कायमचे सोडण्याचा निर्णय घेतला. भरल्या डोळ्यांनी आई-वडिलांच्या आठवणींना निरोप देऊन तो बहुळा नदीच्या तीरावर आला, जिथे त्याने बालपणीचे आनंदी क्षण घालवले होते. बहुळेचे ओंजळभर पाणी पिऊन, गावाकडे वळून शेवटचा अश्रूंनी भरलेला प्रणाम करून, मनू आपल्याला कोणीही खुनी म्हणणार नाही अशा अज्ञात वाटेने आपल्या जन्मभूमीचा कायमचा त्याग करून निघून गेला.
Summary of the Story in English
Janmabhoomi cha tyag (leaving mother land) is a story by Sane Guruji. It is a tale of two inseparable friends, Vinu and Manu, who live in a peaceful and self-reliant village named Saygaon. Drowned in grief following the deaths of his parents and beloved younger sister, the innocent weaver Manu finds in Vinu his sole reason to carry on living. Driven by the greed for money, however, Vinu murders a wealthy visitor who arrives in the village and slips the blood-stained dagger beneath the sleeping Manu’s pillow to conceal his own crime. While the entire village accuses Manu of the killing, Vinu—the very friend Manu trusted with his life—hypocritically points the finger at him before the assembled village gathering.
Devastated by this unforgivable betrayal from his dearest friend, the falsely tarnished Manu breaks down completely and ultimately abandons his beloved birthplace and the Bahula river forever, weeping bitterly into the dead of night.
