Today in Bharat’s History – Sept 20: Spirit of Kanaklata Barua

20 September brings together several remarkable chapters in Bharat’s modern history. The date remembers Kanaklata Barua, who was killed while leading a procession during the Quit India Movement, as well as Annie Besant and an important early milestone in Bharat’s space programme.

TOC: September 20 in Brief

Story of the Day: Kanaklata Barua and the Gohpur Firing of 1942

On 20 September 1942, during the Quit India Movement, a procession moved towards the Gohpur police station in Assam with the intention of hoisting the Tricolour. At its head was Kanaklata Barua, a young participant in the movement. According to the Government of Bharat’s historical record, she was carrying the flag when the police ordered the procession to stop. She continued forward and was shot during the ensuing firing.

The same episode also claimed the life of Mukundaram Kakati, who attempted to take up the flag after Kanaklata was shot. The Ministry of Culture’s historical record identifies the episode as the Gohpur Firing of 1942 and records the deaths of both Kanaklata and Kakati.

Kanaklata’s story is significant because it takes the history of the freedom movement beyond the better-known political centres. Her action occurred in Assam, where local people participated in demonstrations and acts of resistance against colonial authority. The events at Gohpur show how a national movement was experienced at the level of towns, villages, police stations and public institutions.

The Government of Bharat has subsequently remembered Kanaklata among the Unsung Flag Martyrs. Her story remains an important part of the historical memory of Assam’s participation in the freedom movement.

Also Remembered: Annie Besant, 1933

Annie Besant died at Adyar on 20 September 1933. The historical record of the Theosophical Society notes that she had served as its president for twenty-six years. Her life in Bharat encompassed Theosophy, education, political activism and the Home Rule movement.

Besant’s place in history crosses several different fields. She was associated with educational initiatives, intellectual and spiritual movements, public debate and the political demand for greater self-government. Her long association with Adyar also connects her story with one of the important intellectual centres of modern Bharat.

Her death on 20 September therefore provides an opportunity to remember a figure whose life crossed national, intellectual and political boundaries and whose later years were closely connected with public life in Bharat.

Science Note: The First PSLV Developmental Flight

On 20 September 1993, the first developmental flight of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle took place from Sriharikota, carrying the IRS-1E remote-sensing satellite. The mission was unsuccessful and the satellite was not placed into its intended orbit.

ISRO’s historical mission records identify IRS-1E as the payload of PSLV-D1 on 20 September 1993 and classify the launch as unsuccessful.

In the longer history of Bharat’s space programme, however, the mission belongs to the developmental phase of PSLV. The history of major technological systems is not made only by successful launches; early developmental flights also provide experience that contributes to later achievements.

The 20 September 1993 mission is therefore a useful reminder that technological history includes experimentation, setbacks, learning and eventual progress.

Hindi Summary
