While he was in school once his teacher saw some shells of groundnuts scattered in the class. When nobody accepted responsibility for this act, the teacher decided to punish the entire class. Lokmanya Tilak, then a school going child, refused to accept punishment, saying that he would never eat anything in the class. His teacher met his father, who verified the fact. This story tells us about how Lokmanya Tilak was a man of strong principles and was not afraid to stand up to the authorities for what he believed was the right thing to do.

About Bal Gangadhar Tilak

According to Wikipedia,

 Keshav Gangadhar Tilak, also known as Bal Gangadhar Tilak, was an Indian nationalistteachersocial reformerlawyer and a freedom fighter. He was the first leader of the Indian Independence Movement. The British colonial authorities called him “The father of the Indian unrest.” He was also conferred with the title of “Lokmanya“, which means “accepted by the people (as their leader)”.[2]
Tilak was one of the first and strongest advocates of Swaraj (“self-rule”) and a strong radical in Indian consciousness. He is known for his quote in Marathi: “Swarajya is my birthright and I shall have it!”.
