Bagh aur Kutta is a story from Panchatantra . A Bagh (tiger) and a Kutta (dog) become friends. The dog is well fed, while the tiger is hungry and very weak. The tiger asks the dog the secret behind his health.
The dog invites the tiger to visit his master. The dog tells the tiger that in return for good food, he will have to protect the master’s property. The tiger agrees and accompanies the dog.
While walking, the tiger notices a mark around the dog’s neck, and asks him the reason for his mark. The dog tells casually that the mark might be a result of the belt. The tiger asks the dog the reason behind the belt. The dog tells that the master’s servants tie him to a chain all day. The tiger is surprised, but the dog says that he does not mind it- he is able to move freely at night, and the master’s servants love him, feed him well and bathe him. The tiger, upon hearing the dog’s story, says that he would rather remain hungry to enjoy his freedom and returns to the forest.
The moral of this story is that it is better to struggle and work hard than depending on someone else’s generosity and luxuries, if the price of those luxuries is one’s freedom.
