Sukhpal the Fortune Seeker is a traditional Indian folktale about a young man who refuses to accept poverty as his destiny and sets out to discover his fortune. About the Story
Sukhpal is the youngest son of a landlord. According to the custom described in the story, the eldest son inherits his father’s wealth, leaving Sukhpal poor while his elder brother becomes prosperous. His brother does little to help him and even mocks his poverty. Rather than accepting that poverty is simply his fate, Sukhpal decides to leave home. He tells his brother that he will travel into the wider world in search of his fortune and will not return until he has found it. His journey becomes a test not only of his determination but also of his ability to listen, learn and help others.

Sukhpal the Fortune Seeker follows a poor young man who leaves home because he refuses to accept poverty as his destiny. During his travels he encounters a king whose palace repeatedly collapses, a tortoise suffering from an unexplained internal burning, and a tree whose otherwise beautiful fruit tastes bitter.
Sukhpal promises each of them that he will ask about their problems when he finds someone who can provide an answer. Eventually he meets an old sage who has been asleep for twelve years. The sage explains the three mysteries: the king’s palace will continue to fall until his daughter is married; the tortoise suffers because it selfishly keeps its knowledge to itself; and the tree’s bitter fruit is caused by treasure buried beneath its roots.
Sukhpal returns along the same route and helps each of them. He removes the treasure from beneath the tree, allowing its fruit to become sweet. He then asks the tortoise to share its knowledge, which ends the creature’s suffering. When he returns to the king, he explains the secret of the palace, and the king offers him his daughter’s hand in marriage. Sukhpal eventually returns to his village in great prosperity, accompanied by soldiers, musicians and gifts. When his elder brother sees him, Sukhpal reminds him that he had once been told that poverty was his destiny. Sukhpal has now discovered that fortune can change when a person has the courage to seek it.

What Does Sukhpal’s Story Teach Us?
Sukhpal’s fortune is found through perseverance, wisdom and generosity.
The most obvious lesson of the story is perseverance. Sukhpal is told that poverty is his destiny, but he refuses to accept that judgement. He takes responsibility for his own journey and is willing to travel into the unknown. But the story also suggests that fortune is not simply a matter of finding treasure. Sukhpal becomes prosperous because he helps others along the way. He remembers the king, the tortoise and the tree even though he is busy pursuing his own goal.
The tortoise provides perhaps the clearest lesson. Its suffering comes from possessing knowledge but refusing to share it. Once that knowledge is shared, its suffering ends. The story therefore connects wisdom with generosity: knowledge becomes valuable when it is passed on. The bitter fruit tree offers another image of hidden causes. What appears to be a natural defect is actually caused by something buried beneath the surface. Removing the hidden treasure restores the tree and changes its bitter fruit into something sweet.
