The Merchant’s Daughter and the Old Witch
There was once a farmer who had five daughters. After some years, his wife, the mother of the five children died. After their mother died, he married another woman. The stepmother was a mean woman. On her advice, the man took the five girls one day to the river. The girls thought their father had drowned while crossing the river, and the five sisters went into the forest. The found a hut, and went inside little knowing that the woman who lived in the hut was a witch and meant to kill and eat them.
One evening the girls found their eldest sister was missing. The Old witch ate the sisters one after another. Finally, only the youngest girl was left. She told the youngest girl one day to stay at home that day to sweep the house and look after it while she went out. The child swept the room when she saw a large wooden box in the corner of the room. To her horror, she saw inside it the foreheads of her sisters. The Merchant’s Daughter ran away from the house, and the witch followed her. The girl ran into the forest till she reached a people tree. The tree took pity on the girl and opened. The girl lived in the tree for many years. One day, the King of the land learnt about a woman who lived inside a forest. The King’s chief priest knew a mantra that allowed the tree to open up. After carefully looking inside the tree, the guards found the beautiful young girl sat with her hands folded within. When the asked how she had got there, she told him the whole story.
There is a second version of this story in this very episode. In this version, there was a tiger who ate the four sisters instead of the old Witch. Isn’t it fascinating that we have two versions of the same story in this episode?

एक बार एक किसान था जिसकी पाँच बेटियाँ थीं। कुछ वर्षों के बाद, उनकी पत्नी, पाँच बच्चों की माँ की मृत्यु हो गई। मां के मरने के बाद उसने दूसरी महिला से शादी कर ली। सौतेली माँ एक मतलबी औरत थी। उसकी सलाह पर एक दिन वह आदमी उन पाँचों लड़कियों को नदी पर ले गया। लड़कियों को लगा कि उनके पिता नदी पार करते समय डूब गए हैं, और पाँचों बहनें जंगल में चली गईं। उन्हें एक झोपड़ी मिली, और यह जानते हुए भी अंदर चले गए कि झोपड़ी में रहने वाली महिला एक डायन थी और उन्हें मारने और खाने का इरादा रखती थी।
एक शाम लड़कियों ने पाया कि उनकी बड़ी बहन गायब है। बूढ़ी चुड़ैल ने एक के बाद एक बहनों को खा लिया। अंत में, केवल सबसे छोटी लड़की बची थी। उसने एक दिन सबसे छोटी लड़की से कहा कि वह उस दिन घर में रहकर घर में झाडू लगाए और बाहर जाते समय उसकी देखभाल करे। कमरे के कोने में लकड़ी का एक बड़ा बक्सा देखकर बच्ची ने कमरे में झाडू लगाई। अंदर उसने अपनी बहनों के माथे को देखा तो वह डर गई। व्यापारी की बेटी घर से भाग गई, और चुड़ैल ने उसका पीछा किया। लड़की जंगल में तब तक भागी जब तक वह एक पेड़ के पास नहीं पहुँच गई। पेड़ को लड़की पर दया आ गई और वह खुल गया। लड़की कई सालों तक पेड़ में रही। एक दिन, देश के राजा को जंगल में रहने वाली एक महिला के बारे में पता चला। राजा का मुख्य पुजारी एक मंत्र जानता था जिससे पेड़ खुल गया। पेड़ के अंदर ध्यान से देखने के बाद, पहरेदारों ने पाया कि सुंदर युवती हाथ जोड़कर बैठी है। जब उससे पूछा गया कि वह वहां कैसे पहुंची तो उसने पूरी कहानी बता दी।
इसी कड़ी में इस कहानी का दूसरा संस्करण है। इस संस्करण में, एक बाघ था जिसने बूढ़ी चुड़ैल के बदले चार बहनों को खा लिया।
