The king of Ujjaini was killed by a tiger during a hunting expedition. His son, the prince, vowed to reward anyone who could identify the murderer. Manikkasari, the goldsmith, knew the truth—that the tiger had killed the king—but falsely accused Gangazara, the soothsayer’s son, to claim the reward. He presented the king’s crown as evidence, and Gangazara was imprisoned in a dungeon.
In the dungeon, Gangazara recalled his father’s prophecy: “From my birth, poverty. For ten years, imprisonment. Death on the sea-shore. Some happiness afterwards.” Accepting his fate, he thought of his loyal friends—the tiger-king, serpent-king, and rat-king—who had once been rescued by him from a well. The three kings, sensing his distress, gathered their armies and created an underground passage to the dungeon. The rat-king ensured Gangazara received food and water, while the serpent-king and tiger-king vowed to terrorize the kingdom until his release.
For ten years, Gangazara survived in the dungeon, sustained by the rats’ offerings. Meanwhile, tigers and serpents ravaged the kingdom, increasing deaths and chaos. On the final day of his imprisonment, the prince’s daughter died from a snakebite. Desperate, the king sought Gangazara’s help, having heard his cries of innocence. Gangazara revived the princess and all the dead in the kingdom, proving his divine power.
The king, realizing his mistake, begged for forgiveness and offered Gangazara his daughter’s hand in marriage and the throne. Gangazara declined the throne but agreed to marry the princess later. On his way home, he met his elder brother by the sea-coast. Overjoyed, Gangazara died of happiness. His brother, a devotee of Ganesa, prayed to the god to protect Gangazara’s body. However, Ganesa’s attendants devoured the corpse. Enraged, Ganesa restored Gangazara to life.
The brothers reunited, returned to Ujjaini, and Gangazara married the princess, fulfilling his father’s prophecy and ruling justly for many years.
