The Story of Ram Navami

Ram Navami is a popular Hindu festival. It is celebrated on the ninth day, that is the Navami of the Chaitra month. According to the great epic Ramayana once upon a time, there lived a King named Dashrath, who was the King of Ayodhya, He had three wives named Kaushalya, Sumitra and Kai Kai. In spite of being married for a long time, he was not blessed with a child. At this stage, Rishi Vashishth suggested to Dashrath that he should perform the Putra Kameshti Yagna, through which he can have a desired child.

Soon King Dashrata agreed to do the yagna and headed to Maharishi Rishi Shringa’s Ashram. He wanted the Rishi to perform the Yagna. Maharishi agreed and accompanied Dashrath to Ayodhya to solemnize the Putra Kameshti Yagna. As a result of the Yagna, Yogneshwar or Agni Dev appeared and handed Dashrath a bowl of kheer or payas and asked him to feed this to his three wives. King Dashrath gave the payas to Kaushalya and Kaikei. However, as Dashrath was about to hand over the pudding to Queen Sumitra, a bird snatched the pudding and flew away from there. The two other Queens, two gave one half each of their kheer to Sumitra. After a few days, all the three queens conceived Dashrath’s child.

On the ninth day, Navami of Chitra Maas, first month of the Hindu calendar, at noon, Kaushalya gave birth to Lord Shri Ram. Later, Kaikaiye gave birth to Bhatrat, and Sumitra gave birth to twins Lakshman and Shatrughna. It was the day of joyous celebrations in Ayodhya. Hence, the ninth day, Navami, in the month of Chaitra, is celebrated as Ram Navami.
